Statement of Waste Issue
Following extensive work in retail sector, the government agency identified the fact that a major constraint to increased diversion was poorly designed docks. They therefore commissioned a review of dock design and development of best practice guidelines.
Process
- Established steering committee to input to methodology and review outcomes.
- Conducted detail site visits of retail docks in NSW and VIC.
- Conducted international literature search on best practice.
- Consulted with key stakeholders; architects, building managers and retailers.
Findings
- In all instances docks were given least priority in planning process.
- Space was inadequate due to pressures on retail/rentable space.
- No standards existed for the setup of waste and recycling facilities in dock.
- Architects received no feedback on the effectiveness of the dock in relation to waste management.
- Architects were unaware of the changing pressures on tenants re diversion of waste and need to more complex recycling systems on docks.
Outcome
- Development of report outlining status and key findings.
- Development of best practice fact sheets for retail sector.
