Statement of Waste Issue

The hospital required the waste audit to assist in undertaking the reaccreditation process

Process

  • Conduct a detailed Waste Audit of a 24 hour sample of waste and recyclables generated on site 
  • Review current waste management systems and compliance
  • Identify leakage and non-compliance
  • Conduct education survey of staff to obtain an understanding of their attitude and knowledge with regard to waste management
  • Develop recommendations for improvement

Findings

  • 35% of material in the clinical waste stream could be disposed of via the current general waste stream or recycling streams, resulting in savings of $94,000h
  • Waste and recycling systems were not consistently implemented throughout the hospital

Outcome

Action plan presented to Board for implementation prior to Accreditation Audit
