Statement of Waste Issue
Implementation of National Packaging Covenant (NPC) Action Plan.
Process
- Presentations to all employees on NPC and waste. A 30 minute session was delivered to
groups of 15-20 employees at a time. - Implementation of new recycling system throughout entire plant. This was promoted by displays throughout factory and office areas supporting waste reduction and environmental initiatives.
- Development of waste teams throughout the organisation incorporating all departments
- Facilitation of teams.
Findings
- Employees initially displayed a negative attitude to new initiatives (result of recent changes in ownership).
- Core team had good ideas.
- Senior management totally supportive.
Outcomes
- Teams formed in all key departments.
- Employees signed on to the program and enthusiastic about suggestions of new waste reduction/diversion opportunities.
- Increased diversion of materials to recycling and reuse - first three months diversion increased by 30%.
- Implementation of waste avoidance practices - first 3 months savings realised equated to $40,000.
- Working with suppliers and customers to reduce waste impacts.
