NSW EPA Bin Trim Program – Waste Audit & Consultancy has successfully completed over 500 audits under the Bin Trim program. As one of the few organisations to be awarded funding under this program (with even less awarded under the second round of funding), this recognises our expertise in conducting waste assessments and in developing sustainable waste management strategies for the retail sector and particularly for shopping centre complexes. Coupled with our capacity to identify improvements in waste management systems, we were able to develop a range of opportunities for the participating businesses to improve their waste management and in many cases reductions in operating costs.

We hope to build on many of the opportunities identified in the Bin Trim by providing ongoing analytics and reporting of waste management systems. This coupled with our proactive system analysis should bring about significant reductions in operating expenses and well as enhancing landfill diversion programs – both important aspects of any organisation’s sustainability agenda.

Organics Waste – As part of the ongoing commitment to reduce the amount of organics waste being disposed of to landfill, the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage has announced funding for projects that include the provision of bins kitchen caddies and education programs. Please feel free to provide feedback on what you would like to see and how we can assist you in the future. Partnerships – We are very pleased to announce that as part of ongoing services to many organisations, we have renewed our partnerships with 39 of the Shopping Centres belonging to a national shopping centre and property group for management and reporting of waste and recycling systems for their Australian shopping centres. This is a 4 year addition to the original agreement which began in September 2014 and which has delivered significant cost savings and vastly improved sustainability analytics and delivered material net cost savings. We are also very honoured to be associated with a major New York based private equity fund. Our involvement with them includes compactor load management as a central focus of their strategy to improve sustainability and reduce operating costs. We have been providing monthly reports to them and taking over direct liaison with contractors to achieve our identified efficiencies. Who said it costs money to be green!

Changes to EPA Victoria’s waste management regulations – EPA Victoria has made some significant changes to the Environment Protection (Industrial Waste Resource) Regulations 2009. In summary these changes relate to interstate transport of non-liquid prescribed industrial waste and to clarify aspect Beneficial Reuse (a system designed to further reduce wastes to landfill). We recommend either reviewing these changes (http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/our-work/setting-standard) or contacting us directly so we can advise as to what these changes mean to your organisation.

Standards Australia – Dr Trevor Thornton has recently been appointed as the Chairperson of Standards Australia Technical Committee HE-011. This committee is tasked with revising standards related to clinical waste management and other waste management areas. This appointment recognises Trevor’s extensive experience in waste management as well as skills in liaising with a broad industry base and being able to develop high level waste management plans that are practical and sustainable.
